Review: MAC Rebel

Wednesday, February 27, 2013

A product that has been ranted and raved about for the past season and its about time that I do my review on it; MAC Rebel. The intimidating shade is significantly more subdued when applied to the lips and can even be thinned out with a light application to a light pinkish stain. Sometime I even find myself topping it off with an equally pigmented gloss to really make a shiny statement.

I may be late in the game, but I love this lipstick so much, I still wanted to share my thoughts on it.
MAC Rebel was definitely the color of the season for me. I wore it both Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners and haven't stopped since. Even for simply going out to the movies or grabbing a quick bite, I find myself trying to sneak this puppy on (against the boyfriend's recommendation of course).

As with many MAC lipsticks, the formula isn't necessarily moisterizing, so do note that you do need to ensure that your lips are plump and prepared for the intensity that is MAC Rebel. This is available in the permanent line so there is no rush to the counter. It can be purchased at MAC retailers as well as online.

Let me know your favorite MAC lipstick shades. Are they permanent or limited edition? I'm always on the lookout for that next best lipstick.

Review: Dior Amber Diamond

Tuesday, February 26, 2013

One of the most hyped up and famous makeup products of the last few years, Dior Diorskin Shimmer Star in Amber Diamond (more commonly known as Dior Amber Diamond). This luxurious compact can be used as a highlighter or as individual eyeshadows (making it a great travel buddy). However, this beautiful powder comes with a hefty price tag. If you have the resources and you truly enjoy a luxury cosmetic item, I think its worth shelling out the $45.

The product is so easy to apply as a cheek highlighter, it almost melts into the skin. It's basically a more mature and delicate way to put glitter on your face. The sheen it gives is not chunky or flakey, and doesn't cake at all. It blends beautifully with all my foundations and bases I use. I recommend this to add dimension and glow to your daily look.

Above: Some of the individual colors swatched separately

Dior in general is a fantastic and luxurious brand, and this product is definitely one of their stand out items. Dior Amber Diamond can be purchased at department stores that carry Dior (i.e. Nordstrom) and also Sephora.

Let me know if you've tried Dior Amber Diamond, or even Rose Diamond (the other shade) and how it  suits you. Do you think this is an over-hyped product or is it worth shelling out the cash?

Review: Origins Clear Improvement

Sunday, February 24, 2013

When your skin is feeling a bit clogged and a breakout has either already occurred or is on the horizon I  recommend Origins Clear Improvement. I picked up this little travel size version from the Origins counter at my local Macy's to give this one a go. FYI Origins has many of their top selling items in smaller, travel size versions available. In my opinion its a great and more affordable way to try out a products before investing in the full size.

The charcoal mask feels like a typical clay mask, but the dark gray, almost black color can give your little kitten or boyfriend quite the fright. After applying a thick layer all over my face, I let the mask dry completely before using a damp face cloth to remove it. Note that I am the type that tends to leave masks on for much longer than is instructed on the bottle. I had this baby on for an hour before removal (it does say to leave it on until it dries and thats how long it took for me).

As the mask was drying on my skin I could feel it pulling the impurities out. It feels fantastic and is not too drying for my already dry and sensitive skin. I've been using the mask once a week to keep my skin under control and I barely get any zits at all. Now, I don't know if that's from this mask or my entire skin care routine, regardless I love this product and will be sure to purchase the larger size once this little mini is complete.

Origins Clear Improvement can be purchased on the Origins website, or any retailer that sells Origins products (i.e. Macy's).

Hope you enjoy the review & the product and let me know if you've tried this mask or any others from Origins.

Adventures in Costa Rica & Panama

Thursday, February 21, 2013

After two weeks in Costa Rica and Panama it was good to comeback home to my bed and beauty products. We had an amazing time on our trip but after staying in hostels and backpacking for two weeks plus an extreme version of food poisoning, it was nice to come back home. Our trip started off in San Jose, Costa Rica. We headed out to the famed Arenal Volcano, rafted the Rio Balsa, and zip lined in Monteverde. However, it was in Monteverde that our plans changed entirely. We changed our itinerary and ended up adding Panama to the list, turning out the be the best decision we made. Here are a few pictures and you can see how beautiful the water was in Panama.

Nate at our watering hole in Peurto Viejo, Costa Rica
Delicious fish curry in Peurto Viejo, Costa Rica
The border crossing to Panama
We finally made it to Bocas del Toro!
More beers back in Costa Rica.

Please note that I did not take my fancy-pants camera to Costa Rica as we were backpacking and staying in hostels. I also never brought my camera to the beach (a sad story of sand getting into my camera lens in high school has made me fearful), so these are only a few pictures (Nate took most of the pics).

However, I hope you guys still enjoyed!

Get Ready With Me # 2: Date Night

Tuesday, February 19, 2013

A soft look for an evening out with your boo.

This video shows not only how I like to get ready for a date night, but also how I like to use pink eyeshadows. A color that many times can make you look sickly, I like to use the warm toned pinks to create a soft and romantic look. In this look I used only the Bare Minerals Ready Eyeshadows that I am absolutely in love with. I used both the Star Treatment Palette (that I picked up around the holidays) and the Next Big Thing Quad (from the most recent collection). With a little black eyeliner and a pink lip, this look is not too bold so that your date won't be looking at your makeup all night long.

Empties: January 2012

Monday, February 18, 2013

Another month, another absurd amount of empty products. I really thought that I would slow down at some point, but that is obviously not the case. Anyhow, my addiction to beauty products and makeup and my rate of using them can hopefully help me compare and contrast so many different products. Make sure to check out the video below to hear mini reviews on each of these products.

Weekend in Mexico: A Wedding in Riviera Maya

Tuesday, February 12, 2013

4 days in Riviera Maya, just outside of Cancun, was the perfect weekend getaway. A few weeks ago Nate and I stepped in when my parents couldn't attend to a family-friend's wedding. The weekend was full of food, friends, festivities, and many very water-downed drinks. The ocean side resort was beautiful, the water was warm and the sun was shining all weekend. It was very hard to return to Oregon after such an amazing vacation. I thought I would share with you a few photos from our trip.

Our first breakfast at the resort was delicious! I love warmer climates because they have so many fresh and delicious fruits that just aren't the same back home.

The water was crystal clear and aqua blue. Everyday was spending lounging around the beach and playing in the water.

The day of the wedding finally arrived! The wedding was right on the beach, a very intimate and beautiful ceremony full of lots of crying and laughing.

We decided it would be appropriate to change out of our swimsuits for the wedding.

The reception was full of handmade decorations and the food was a mexican style family-style meal. Probably the beat food we ate the whole time we were there.

They had laid out disposable cameras on the tables so guests could shoot photos for the bride and groom. Nate of course dove right in.

A sweet moment during the groom + mother dance. Note the bubble machine.

And finally, as all good Jewish wedding go, the bride, groom, and all the bridesmaids (one shown) were thrown in the air while sitting on chairs. A dangerous but time old tradition I always look forward to at every Jewish wedding or Bar Mitzvah.

I hope you guys enjoyed a little glimpse into my weekend in Mexico!

Favorites: January 2013

Sunday, February 10, 2013

January, a cold and dry month when the heat is blasting and your skin can get dry and flaky. We decided to escape the weather and took a trip to Costa Rica and Panama. Thus, not only was I using products to combat the cold, but I busted out the sunscreens and travel essentials as well.

Make sure to check out the video below to see full descriptions on why I've been loving these products recently. Also, the list of products is also a list of links of where to find the products mentioned online.

Best of Beauty 2012: Skin, Hair, Body

Saturday, February 9, 2013

Part two of my favorite products of 2012 includes skincare, haircare, and body care. From my favorite cleansers depending on how my skin is doing to the best shampoo that I discovered over the past year, this video goes over the top picks of the last year.

As you can tell from my excessive empties videos, I go through tons of products constantly. My passion for products, specifically skin care is nothing new. As my blog and YouTube channel are fresh and new projects, this fanatic obsession started 15 years ago (imagine all the products). At 13 that may have included Bath and Body Works, Bonnie Bell, and Wet n' Wild; but some of those brands are still in my makeup routine and they have matured and grown right alongside me.

I hope you enjoy the video and make sure to leave a comment and tell me what you think!

Best of 2012: Makeup & Nails

Friday, February 8, 2013

I know its incredibly late, but after being in Costa Rica and Panama on vacation, I still wanted to share my favorite products for the last year. This is part one of two that I'll be posting. The first being makeup and nails and the second will be skincare, body care, haircare, and any random bits.

After an entire year of trying out products and falling in and out of love with them its so hard to finally pick which ones are your favorites. Life is hard. Truth be told, many of those items were easy picks. They are the products that I reach for almost daily and are cemented into my daily routines. As much as I love to test out every product that is available, there are those that never leave my stash regardless of how many times they show up in an empties video.

This video talk about my favorites makeup bases, from primers to BB creams and foundations, and then into lip products, from conditioners to liner and lipsticks. Watch the video below to see all the products mentioned and a brief description on why these products were the best of 2012.

Recipe: Ginger Molasses Cookies

Thursday, February 7, 2013

Even though the holiday season is over I still thought I would share a cookie recipe that is perfect for the colder months. The warm and fragrant spices in this recipe are perfect for this time of the year. These cookies are even good to make ice cream sandwiches with. Just place a dollop of softened vanilla ice cream (my recommendation is the Haagen Daz Vanilla) between two cookies and enjoy!

Hope you like the recipe and the video!

3/4 Cup of Butter (room temperature)
2 Cups of Sugar
2 Eggs (room temperature)
1/2 Cup Molasses
2 tsp White Vinegar
3 3/4 Cups of Flour
1 1/2 tsp Baking Soda
1 1/2 tsp Ground Ginger
1/2 tsp Ground Cinnamon
1/4 tsp Ground Cloves
1/2 Cup Turbinado Sugar

Preheat Oven to 325 degrees.
Whip together the butter, sugar, eggs, molasses, and vinegar. In a separate bowl (I did not do this in the video, but I recommend it) mix the dry ingredients until fully combined. With the mixer on low, gradually add the dry mixture to the wet mixture and mix until just combined (do not over mix).
Roll about a tablespoon of dough into your hands until it is a smooth ball.
Roll the ball into the turbinado sugar and press down so the sugar sticks to the dough.
Place coated cookie balls on a parchment lined baking sheet and bake for 11 minutes.
Cool in the pan for a few minutes before moving the cookies to a cooling rack.
