Restaurant: City State Diner

Wednesday, March 20, 2013

The day of my birthday Nate took me here for a celebratory brunch. We had been eyeing this place for the last couple months or so and decided to finally take the dive when it was just the two of us during the middle of the week; weekends are packed and expect a long wait, especially if you are in a large group. Overall, the food was good, nothing to die for, and the service was mediocre at best. I would definitely like to go back and give it a second shot at some point.

The diner-esque ambience is the Portland hipster-scene at its finest. Casual and laid back, while also having deep-friend softshell crab benedict on the menu. Unfortunately, this seasonal dish didn't make an appearance when we graced City State Diner with our presence. Instead, Nate ordered the crab cake hash and I, the juevos rancheros; one of my all-time favorites. Nate's was bland and basically tasted like two-day-old crab cakes (which are on the menu btw) flaked into home fries. To say the least, hot sauce flowed like wine.

As can be seen above, my jeuvos and green chili were awkwardly served using a giant flour tortilla as a bread bowl; not ideal and not conducive to successful juevos (I would have much preferred two smaller tacos on a plate rather than a bowl). Other than some misguided plating, the green chili juevos rancheros were solid and something I would recommend if you happen to come here.

Despite the slightly disappointing food, Nate and I both agreed that we may very well try this place again. Truth is, our standards for great brunch have been set pretty high by some of the other Portland eateries; and especially by my all time favorite, Snooze in Denver (review to come).

Hope you enjoyed!

Top 5: High End Powder Blushes

Monday, March 18, 2013

Another new series to begin here on The Makeup Architect and on the accompanying YouTube channel, Top 5. In this series I will pick a category, i.e. high end powder blushes, select my top 5, and talk away about why they are so fantastic and how they've changed my life. This is serious business. This time around powder blushes hit the stage. Hope you guys enjoyed and let me know if you have any ideas for what other categories would be of interest; eyeshadow bases, eyeliners, lip treatments, foot creams, hair masks, or anything you can think of!

Beauty Haul # 1

Sunday, March 17, 2013

I finally decided to film a haul for my Youtube channel. I hesitated for so long doing these types of videos because I always felt as though they were a form of bragging, which they may very well be. But I have also found, when I watch other Youtuber's hauls, that I like to see the items that are now on the market and it also tells me a little about their taste; thus, I can compare my own personal taste in beauty and fashion to theirs. Henceforth, I have joined the millions of haulers out there and added my very first one to the channel. I hope you guys enjoy!

FOTD 3-13-13

Thursday, March 14, 2013

I thought I would start a new series here on the blog. Face of the Days aren't new friends with blogs, but definitely new to The Makeup Architect. I think they are great ways for me to share the makeup that I'm using, and a way for me to share mini reviews on the products I'm trying out. Let me know what you guys think and if I should continue with these kinds of posts. Hopefully yes, because I thought it was so fun to do!

For the look I first started out by smoothing the Hourglass No. 28 Primer Serum all over my face. I'm enjoying this product sample, but not enough to shell out the money, it's good, but not life changing. After letting that set and sink in, I used my trusty Chanel Lift Lumiere Foundation in Ivoire (14). This is one of my favorite (and most expensive) foundations. It gives a beautiful satin finish and the medium coverage, buildable foundation lasts all day (the plastic packaging is obviously not very durable).

To cover the dark circles under my eyes and the redness around my nose I used my MAC Pro Longwear Concealer in NW 20. This is a full coverage and very blendable long-lasting product. My only complaints are the smell and the over zealous pump dispenser, otherwise its perfect for those of us with those genetic deep purple under eyes. To ensure that there would be no creasing and migrating into the fine lines under my eyes, I used the Bare Minerals Mineral Veil to set the concealer. To cover my blemishes and scars, my favorite is the MAC Studio Finish Concealer in NW 20, it doesn't budge all day once it's been set with powder; this time was my MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural.

MAC's Bare Study Paint Pot served as the perfect base for the star of the show, my new Burberry Sheer Eye Shadow in Rosewood. This is THE ultimate in luxury eyeshadows. There is no going back now that I've tried this shadow, it has reset my standards for the possibilities of makeup; over dramatic much? I placed rosewood all over the lid, into the crease, and took it under the eye. I used The Balm shadows from the Nudetude Palette; Sultry to blend out the crease and Sassy on the brow bone as as inner corner highlight. Finally, a little brown eyeliner, Nars Laguna as a contour, Tarte Magic on the cheeks, Revlon Coral Reef on the lips, and Covergirl Clump Crusher Waterproof on the lashes.

This has been my go-to-lookfor a while now and I am absolutely in love with it!

Hope you guys enjoyed!

Recipe: Veggie & Tofu Curry

Wednesday, March 13, 2013

This is such an easy and delicious recipe for a Thai curry. I usually have the majority of these ingredients on hand and it makes for a quick weeknight meal that I don't really have to plan. Curry is such a warm and comforting meal for these, hopefully, last few weeks of winter. Hope you guys enjoy and let me know if you try the recipe out! Don't forget to check out the video to see the recipe in action.

2 and 1/2 cups canned coconut milk
1 tbs thai red curry paste
3 tbs thai fish sauce
2 tsp coconut palm sugar or light brown sugar
1 and 1/2 cups sliced white button mushrooms
1 and1/2 cups trimmed green beans
1 serrano chili, minced
6 oz firm tofu, rinsed, drained, & cubed
steamed jasmine rice to serve
fresh cilantro & pickled chili sauce for garnish

1. Pour about half the coconut milk into a wok or skillet. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
2. Add the red curry paste, fish sauce, and palm sugar. Mix thoroughly.
3. Add the mushrooms, stir to combine and cook for one minute
4. Stir in the rest of the coconut milk and bring back to a boil.
5. Add the green beans, serrano, and tofu. Simmer gently for another 4-5 minutes.
6. Serve over steamed rice and garnish with the pickled chili sauce and chopped cilantro.

Weekend in Montana: Big Sky

Saturday, March 9, 2013

The day after my birthday four of us piled into the Subaru and made our way to Big Sky, Montana to see friends and play in the snow. The 12 hour drive included Dicks Hamburgers, hours of Eddy Vedder, and a couple speeding tickets that didn't slow us down. We immediately passed out after the long drive and only 4 hours later we were hitting the slopes. For a beginner skier like myself, and the advanced skiers that I was with, Big Sky was both an exciting and beautiful experience. I thought I would share a few pictures from our weekend adventure.

I improved my skiing ability, spent time with old friends, and ate and drank a plenty; a successful weekend in my opinion.

I know there were lots of pictures but I hope you guys still enjoyed!

Favorites: February 2013

Friday, March 8, 2013

Another month, another favorites video. This time around I had a lot more makeup bits than normal since I've been experimenting a bit more with different eye looks. I'm pretty settled in my skincare but there were still a few bits that I received as samples that really impressed me as well. Make sure to watch the video below to get a better and more detailed description of each product!

My 27th Birthday at Lucca & Circa 33

Thursday, March 7, 2013

To celebrate another year of my birth, a few friends and I headed over to Lucca in Northeast Portland for dinner and drinks. It was only a Thursday night so it wasn't the wildest of evenings, but it was still filled with good food and great company. Lucca is a delicious and well priced Italian restaurant. We ordered a beet salad, pizzas, and the pork tagliatelle. All were absolutely delicious. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. Overall, the perfect place for a large group on a special occasion. Here are a few photos from the evening.

After dinner and a couple of fruity drinks, a few of us made our way over to Circa 33, a "speak-easy" of sorts in Southeast Portland. After slyly being given the password of 1933 (the year prohibition was abolished) you would walk over by the bathrooms to a nondescript bookshelf. Step two was to open up the "mafia" book and type in the code to push back the bookshelf and enter into a back bar room. There we had delicious drinks  a plenty and Nate even pretended he was an iconic pianist.

Overall, my birthday was everything that I wanted; filled with food, friends, and a good time.

Hope you enjoyed!
